February 23 - 24

Appins Spring Gathering, Vienna, VA (Private event - members only)
The yearly informal gathering at Dan's home to exchange information, pull together your kit, and party!

March 15-16

Military Through The Ages, Jamestown, VA
This is Jamestown's 400th anniversary year, Mara has received an application
and applied.  If we are accepted by Jamestown this will be an official Appin
event.

April 19-20

Marietta Mansion's Marching Through Time, Glen Dale, MD
A timeline event, low key and fun. Camp on site; food available from vendor during the day, but we often cook our own food and/or participate in the site barbecue Saturday night. Unit demo on Saturday, parade on Sunday. Setup Friday afternoon/evening. Public hours 11 AM to 5 PM. www.pgparks.com/places/eleganthistoric/marietta_events.html

Directions: Rte 450 East about 4 miles to light; Left on #193 North (0.4 mi.); first Left on Balls Station Rd. 100 feet. First Left into Marietta Mansion driveway and proceed to campsite to unload. Park car 1 mile further North on #193 in the Community Center on Left. Free shuttle buses to site.

April 24-27

Ft. Frederick Market Fair, Big Pool, MD - not an official Appin event
18th c. shopping event, open for four days, Thurs.-Sun. You can come for the day in modern clothes, or camp 18th c. style. Appin attire is appropriate. For the last several years we have camped behind the Grahams' sutlery, Highland Arms. Food is available from vendors during the day. Set up is Wednesday from 7 am - 10 pm. You can carry your gear to camp anytime; cars are allowed on-site to unload camping gear from 7 to 9 am or 5 - 10 pm Thurs-Sat. Public hours 9 am - 5 pm. Entrance & camping fees. You must preregister by April 1 to camp; otherwise you can come as a day visitor. http://www.friendsoffortfrederick.info/

Directions:.From Washington, DC - Take I-270 West to Frederick, then I-70 West toward Hagerstown. Fort Frederick is 18 miles west of Hagerstown and one mile south of I-70 near Big Pool (Rt. 56, Exit 12). Drive 1.4 mi., then Right on Ft. Frederick Rd. into Ft. Frederick State Park.

April 26

Southern Maryland Celtic Festival, Prince Frederick, MD
This was the first event the Appin ever attended in 1984. A fun one-day event. www.cssm.org/festival

Directions: Take Rte. 4 South (East?) from the Beltway. Drive 31 miles to Prince Frederick; go another 4 miles. Turn Right on Rte 254, go 2 miles. Left on #265 (Mackall Road) 6 miles. Right into Jefferson Patterson Park.

May 10

Frederick Celtic Festival, Urbana Fairgrounds, Urbana, MD
One day of fun. Camping available near site. Public hours 10 am - 6 pm. Food available from vendors during the day. http://www.sasmm.com/festival/schedule.html

Directions: Take #270 West to Exit 26 towards Urbana. Go straight through the roundabout and turn left on #355 at the traffic light. The fairgrounds are about a mile on the left, just past the elementary school.

May 16-18

Battle of Culloden, Westfield Heritage Village, Rockton, Ontario -- Info only (not an official unit event)

June 6-8

McHenry Scottish Games, Deep Creek Lake, MD
Event in the cool mountain air of Garrett County. Low key and fun. Usually arrive Friday to set up and camp over Saturday night. Food vendors, or bring your own food; restaurants also nearby. http://www.highlandfest.info/index.html

Directions: Take 270 West to Frederick MD, 70 West to Hancock, MD, 68 West through Cumberland, MD to exit 14A-219 South. Take 219 south 14 miles to the Fairgrounds on the left.

June 14

Potomac Celtic Festival, Leesburg, VA
Primarily a Celtic music festival, with eight stages of music. Also has crafts, vendors, clans, games, and, most important, living history. No field demos or live firing. Set up on Fri. afternoon/evening and camp Fri. and Sat. nights. Plenty of food vendors or cook our own. Public hours 10 am - 6 pm -- cars must be off site by 9:30.

From Washington, DC:
Take the Dulles Toll Road/Dulles Greenway (VA-267) West approximately 28 miles;
Take US-15 S/VA-7 West (exit #1A), on the left towards LEESBURG / WARRENTON;
Merge onto VA-7 West, go approximately 2 miles;
Take the VA-7 BUSINESS exit towards LEESBURG, turn RIGHT onto VA-7 BUSINESS/West MARKET ST.;
Turn LEFT onto FAIRVIEW ST Northwest;
At the second stop sign turn LEFT onto OLD WATERFORD RD.;
500 feet to Morven Park entrance on the right.

September 13-14

Virginia Scottish Games, Delaplane, VA
Sky Meadow State Park (eastern slope of Blue Ridge near intersection of U.S. 17 and U.S. 50 - west of Middleburg). May be two-day event; more details when available. www.vascottishgames.org

October 4

Richmond Highland Games and Celtic Festival, Fair Grounds, Richmond, VA
Large games with many clans and vendors, two pub stages. Living history participation is down to us & the SCA. Overnight camping Fri. & Sat. nights but not a very good location. Sarah Cosby and family have hosted the Appin in past years; contact them for accomodations. Public hours 9 am - 6 pm. http://www.richmondceltic.com/site.asp

Directions: From the North: Travel I-95 to Exit 84A, take I-295 south towards Norfolk to Exit 38B, turn right and take Meadowbridge Road west to 1st light past RR tracks. Left on Carolina/Azalea Ave.; east about a half mile to 1st Right into Gate 7 (VA State Fairgrounds).

November 29

Scottish Heritage Festival (Lyceum), Alexandria, VA
Small event, we set up tables and do show-and-tell. Parking on site, setup outside under covered walkway, presentation in afternoon. No fires. Food available nearby; coffee and pastries provided. Public hours 10 am - 4 pm.
Held at the Lyceum, 201 South Washington Street, Alexandria, VA.

December 6

Scottish Christmas Walk, Alexandria, VA
Parade starts about 10:30 AM; please be at muster point by 10 am. Big event with large crowds. Parking either on street (but you have to be early to get a spot) or at designated garages with shuttle buses.

Appin Annual Meeting, Vienna, VA (private - members only)
Hosted by Dan Gilbert, meeting begins mid-afternoon, potluck party follows into the wee hours. Plenty of floor space available to sleep it of Sat. night.
