A. Men’s Kit

Thumbnail version:

  • Shirt (leine) -- can be bought or made from J. P. Ryan's Men's Shirt pattern from James Townsend & Co.Smoke & Fire, or other sutlers.  Townsend also sells men's shirts and other clothing.
  • Jacket -- can be made from J. P. Ryan's 1750's Men's Coat pattern.  The Scots tended to wear their waistcoats cut a bit shorter than the English, but without the extreme cutaway front of the latter part of the century.
  • Waistcoat -- can be made from J. P. Ryan's 18th Century Waistcoast pattern, using 1750s style pattern.  The Scots tended to wear their waistcoats cut a bit shorter than the English, but without the extreme cutaway front of the latter part of the century, so use the earlier pattern but with a shorter length.
  • Great Kilt: go to Wrapping and Wearing The Great Kilt
  • Trews -- pending
  • Stockings -- pending
  • Shoes -- either pampooties or the Men's Shoes offered by James Townsend or Smoke and Fire.  Directions for various types of pampooties can be found on Marc Carlson's Historical Shoe Designs web site; the following are probably appropriate: Lucas Shoe type 4;  Lucas Shoe type 3; and the Aran Pampootie.

  • Kertch or Pinner -- large square piece of fabric worn on the head by married women, like a kerchief
